If telling you Joe Louis Walker is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame, a two-time Grammy winner, and a four-time Blues Music Award winner, isn’t enough to get you out to see him headline the Apple Blossom Festival, I may as well stop typing. Born in San Francisco, a 1949 Christmas Day present for a family originally from Cleveland, Mississippi, Walker learned the blues from his father’s 45s and 78s. “Blues was a natural to me,” Walker says during our early March phone interview. He describes the blues scene during his teenage years as “very healthy,” allowing him to perform with classic East Bay artists such as Lowell Fulson and Jimmy McCracklin.

Come join us for a day of music and fun on Saturday, March 9 as we celebrate our 19th year! This year’s event features a wide range of great performances including the Duo Quartet, Nu-Blu, Jerry Wicentowski & the Wiseman Institute, the Bloomfield Bluegrass band and Mike Beck. In addition to the main stage acts, there will be a workshop with cowboy singers Mike Beck & Scott Gerber discussing the lives of working cowboys while swapping songs, and an old-time fiddle workshop with Plaid Stranger’s Karen Celia Heil.

Saturday evening Feb 9, a stormy, gusty night, I and a friend went to the Occidental Art Center to see the "Billy Holiday Project", the brain child of our local very talented artist Stella Heath. The show had sold out and I was happy to have my previously purchased online tickets. This young woman's singing took my breath away, smooth as velvet as she sang uplifting as well as deeply contemplative songs that referenced some painful history. Stella sings in the style of "Lady Day" Lester Young's nickname for Billie Holliday.
