For 2019, the Fifth District office has one New Year’s Resolution: to focus on improving West County’s physical, intellectual and social infrastructure.

Whew. After one week of deliberations, the Board of Supervisors has ratified the county’s 2018-19 operating and capital budget, totalling $1.68 billion. Looking toward the future with the hope of rebuilding our County after last fall’s horrific fire, we approved a strategic budget that will help us ride out our current storm while also preparing for challenges we anticipate and expect in the future.

In the Fifth District, where we were thankfully spared from the destruction of last year’s fire, we’re working to make West County more resilient and and resistant to “new abnormal.” From improving roads and enhancing bicycle and pedestrian safety to providing more support and services to our homeless community members and giving our coastal and river communities stronger voices in county government, I think West County is better off going into 2019 than it was in 2018.

In the Fifth District, we’ve been talking a lot about carrying capacity these days.bOur office defines carrying capacity as the maximum number of visitors that a site can satisfy at one time. I think if you survey any west county resident, they’ll likely tell you we’re nearing, have reached or have far exceeded the area’s carrying capacity — especially during summer, when tourists seek respite from summertime heat, and especially along the river and coast.
