Activists Host Event to Share 'Innovative Housing Solutions for the Homeless'

Nov 1, 2018
by Will Carruthers

Faced with an ongoing housing and homeless crisis, Sonoma County activists are pushing local municipalities to consider innovative solutions to house thousands of people without homes.

One possible solution, creating communities of tiny houses, is the subject of a Homeless Action event this Saturday.

At the event, two speakers with experience planning, building and maintaining tiny homes will speak in the Santa Rosa City Council Chambers.

Sharon Lee, executive director of the Low Income Housing Institute, will talk about how Seattle built 'Tiny Villages,' in an effort to shelter some of the city's homeless residents.

"LIHI develops and operates housing for low-income and homeless people, and also provides a range of supportive service programs to assist tenants in maintaining stable housing and increasing self-sufficiency," according to the organization's website.

Since its founding in 1991, the nonprofit has developed over 4,000 units of housing for rental and ownership, "owns over 1,800 units serving individuals, families, seniors, homeless people and those with special needs" and manages ten Tiny House Sites in Seattle.

The LIHI's tiny house communities were recently covered in a Washington Post article about tiny houses.

River King, the local leader of the American Tiny Home Association, will speak about the process of planning and building tiny homes.

"King and her then 2-year-old son, River, fell between the cracks of the Sonoma County’s housing crisis and landed in Santa Rosa’s Safe Parking Program. She was horrified by the challenges that homeless families face and how these struggles go largely unnoticed by local communities," according to a 2016 Gazette article.

The event, "Innovative Housing Solutions for the Homeless,"will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3,5:30 PM - 7:30PM in the Santa Rosa City Council Chambers at100 Santa Rosa Avenue
