WHY
There are over 300,000 domestic workers who work as housekeepers, nannies, and caregivers in private homes in California, yet household workers have been categorically excluded from basic health and safety protections provided by CAL/OSHA.During the COVID-19 pandemic, this exclusion  has exacerbated the risks that domestic workers and day laborers face on a daily basis.Right now domestic workers are on the frontlines of the health crisis, working with some of the people most vulnerable to the illness, often without adequate protective equipment or training. In this crisis, as with those caused by the recent devastating California Wildfires, domestic workers have had to make the impossible choice between working in unsafe conditions or trying to make ends meet without any income.
To protect the health and safety of California’s domestic workers, California Domestic Workers Coalitions is working with its allies to pass SB 1257 The Health and Safety for All Workers Act. SB 1257 would remove the exclusion of domestic workers from CAL/OSHA, so that domestic workers can have the same legal right as other workers to health and safety training and protective equipment and to be protected against retaliation when they advocate for their own health and safety at work.

The CDWC is a statewide coalition consisting of organizations working to advance the dignity and respect for Domestic Workers and their families. The organizations that are a part of our steering committee include: ALMAS of the Graton Day Labor Center, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, Filipino Advocates for Justice, Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network, Instituto de Educación Popular del Sur California (IDEPSCA), Mujeres Unidas y Activas, Pilipino Workers Center, and The Women’s Collective of Dolores Street Community Services.
