We’ve significantly Ramped up our Meals on Wheels production as well as Access via Phone to Social services.

Our program manager, Sherri, checks in on 94 year old Dessie Each week, and all of her other clients to make sure they stay connected to their community during the Shelter in Place order. The news of a global pandemic called COVID-19 has changed our lives, and Council on Aging has acted quickly to ensure that our staff, volunteers, and clients are safe. Clients like 94 year old Dessie. Although her son and daughter-in-law visit her home daily, one of the social highlights of Dessie’s week is to spend time with friends at our Adult Day Respite Program in Sonoma. She misses her friends, and our program manager, Sherri, misses her. Each week, Sherri checks in on Dessie, and all of her other clients to make sure they stay connected to their community. This is just part of our mission at Council on Aging, and there is always more work to do. We’ve significantly ramped up our Meals on Wheels production, Social Services and mental health support, Legal services, Information and Resources, and Fiduciary Services. We’re here for you.

Now more than ever, we need your support. Regrettably, Derby after Dark, that fun and exciting annual celebration that has been a Council on Aging tradition for decades, has been postponed. This disruption will significantly impact our funding, and the deficit will impact our mission.

Our work is important. Please donate if you are able. We are competing to serve, and advocate for, a population that doesn’t always receive the respect it has earned. There are many ways to give. Please consider sustainable giving, corporate giving, bequests, and online giving. Additionally, keep an eye on our event calendar and social media channels, and share this message with your family and friends. We urgently need your support to help us continue our work. Council on Aging is the crisis response organization for North Bay seniors, and with your help, we will be here for every disaster thrown our way. We’re here for you.

There is No Better Time to Design Age Friendly Communities

In a community that’s livable for all ages, intergenerational relationships are highly valued. Getting to know your neighbors is age friendly, and provides advantages for all! According to Dr. Erik Erikson, a noted social psychologist, the benefits include:

  •  Opportunities for all to learn new skills- Technology? Cooking? Tutoring? Sharing the great outdoors? The possibilities are endless!

  •  Giving older adults and younger people a sense of purpose—all gain from helping one another out.

  •  Decreasing fears children may have of older people

  •  Helping children and young adults to understand and later accept their own aging

  •  Invigorating and energizing older adults

  •  Helping reduce isolation and the likelihood of depression in the elderly

  •  Fill a void for children who do not have grandparents available to them

  •  Help keep stories and history alive!

Need further evidence that neighborhood connections are important?

A Pew Research Institute study notes that:

  •  Neighbors who know each other look out for each other

  •  79% of people who use an online forum to connect with their neighbors also talk to them in person at least once a month.

  •  67%+ of homeowners feel safer when they know their neighbors.

  •  35% of people who know their neighbors reported they’ve shared information about safety with them.
