Are you ready for an adrenaline-fueled ride through classic literature? Santa Rosa Junior College is presenting ‘All the Great Books (Abridged).’ Over eighty works are referred to in passing, although the humor centers around well-known authors such as James Joyce and Charles Dickens.
Adapting a script that was originally designed for three actors to an ensemble of twelve was “fun and challenging” according to director and co-playwright Reed Martin. It is “fast, funny and physical…a combination of smart and silly jokes.” The setting is a remedial literature class, where students are required to review all the classics in less than two hours.
Honed over many years of performance and refreshed with contemporary references, the script by Martin and Austin Tichenor tackles thick tomes like “War & Peace” in a matter of minutes. Martin teases that the production may give you motion sickness with its enthusiastic energy. Sign up for a crash course in literature with this chaotically riveting comedy.

‘Only Kidding!’ delves into the competitive world of stand-up comics who are dreaming of a big break in the spotlight. From a quarreling duo to Jackie, who is desperately trying to stay relevant, director Jeremy Boucher assures that “the audience will find themselves rooting for someone. We get to see behind the scenes of a comic’s life in the green room.”
Playwright Jim Geoghan sets a serious, cynical tone despite the constant stream of raunchy, profanity-laced jokes. Humor takes work, and Boucher explains that the intense language is a result of “always working on new bits…that’s how these comedians talk to each other.” He has encouraged the actors to test their limits with pitch and inflection. Rather than attempting to update the 1980s setting, the director has opted for a nostalgic feel.
