‘Billy Nobody’ is a flamboyant romantic comedy centered around vivacious Aurora (Elizabeth Henry) and Billy (John Rowan), who has allowed the pressures of responsibility and toxic relationships to transform his worldview into one of fear. Written by local playwright Stanley Rutherford, it uses ordinary situations like frustration at the Big Value checkout stand to create a relatable setting.

Sharon Hawthorne, the director, has been looking for contemporary pieces that have not been performed in the area before. “I particularly like that there’s lots of room for directorial interpretation.” The only request from Rutherford was that the set should be designed with red as the dominant color. “I am blessed to have attracted a wonderful group of actors” Hawthorne comments. “This is not a naturalistic play—to enjoy it, you must be willing to give yourself over to its absurdity.”

Left Edge Studio Theatre - This Random WorldLeft Edge Theatre offers a Season Showcase presenting snippets of potential plays for the upcoming season, and ‘This Random World’ was an audience favorite from last year. Director Phoebe Moyer describes it as “a cascading series of missed connections that result in…lessons that are all too familiar, the painful as well as the redeeming. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of how one is related to strangers.” In an unorthodox story format by Steven Dietz, the plot follows various people in their daily lives that run parallel to each other, rather than intersecting.

Paige Picard (Claire) describes her character as a “beautifully complex woman…she doesn’t have all the answers but sets herself up on the impossible mission of finding them anyway.” Intelligent and witty, Claire still finds herself “crippled with self-doubt.” Down-to-earth personalities are at the core of this play. Moyer mentions that there are “minute by minute interactions between people as they try to make sense of the world and their place in it.” This is a realistic, humorous journey into the power of connections.
