Monte Rio's Strong Community Joins Forces for Flood Recovery

Apr 5, 2019

Monte Rio has seen natural disaster before but this flood was a Big One. While many escaped unscathed, there were businesses and homes that experienced severe damage.

Our community spirit is strong and we come together to help one another in times such as these. Sometimes that help is in the form of patronizing our local businesses, sometimes it’s in the form of physical labor and sometimes it’s just stopping to listen, share smiles or tears and offer a kind word to a friend or neighbor.

Our recovery process began the day the flood waters receded and will be ongoing for some time. Mud, slush, crud, dehumidifiers, toxic sludge, hazardous materials, dumpster runs, debris pickup, dealing with insurance companies and loans and grants for recovery are some of the things that will be part of our conversations for the foreseeable future.

The marquee on our iconic Rio Theater says “A River Runs through It – The Sequel.” The Russian River does indeed run through Monte Rio. It may divide us geographically but it also brings us together. It’s why we came to live here, why we stay, why we will recover and why we will back better and stronger than ever before.

Monte Rios IS Vacation Wonderland

Thank you to  Friends of Monte Rio who went forward with the Supper Club on March 4th just a few days after the evacuation order had been lifted and to guest chef Bree Ann Leighton for donating the night’s proceeds to Clean River Alliance. Eighty-eight river folk came together for a much needed evening of good food, entertainment and mingling with friends and neighbors.

Upcoming events by the this hardworking, amazing community group include Supper Club featuring Lata’s Indian Cuisine on Monday, April 1; Game Night on Thursday, April 11; and Easter Egg Hunt and Games on Sunday, April 14. (The last event being held at Monte Rio School.) A new summer program will include swimming lessons at Monte Rio Beach. More information is available at  friendsofmonterio.org  and monterio.org

Another big thank you to  Michael Tabib and Curtain Call Theater. The opening of their new show “Spike Heels “was derailed by the flood event. The theater did not sustain damage but opening night was the same day that many people were allowed back into the area and their homes for the first time. Opening weekend was delayed until March 8 and free tickets were offered to flood residents attending the performance that evening. They continue to offer one or two pay what you can Fridays at most productions. Hope you were able to see the show – it was a blast. Next up is Flying Leap Improv on April 6 and opening in June - Macbeth by William Shakespeare (the Witches Cut).

Mark your calendars for The Monte Rio Chamber of Commerce’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament at Northwood Golf Club on Friday May 3rd. Come on out and play 9 holes at this top rated MacKenzie course set along the Russian River and amongst the scenic redwoods. This is THE major fundraising event for Monte Rio’s annual July 4th Fireworks Weekend Program – the best Fireworks on the River - EVER! You can also support us by becoming a T sponsor and advertise your business at the first tee. Don’t play? Join us afterwards for a Chicken and Ribs BBQ at Northwood Bistro or go to Eventbrite and make a donation. The Monte Rio Chamber is grateful for the support of our sponsors and community over the last 19 years. www.monterio.org   #MonteRioRocks
