Independence Day Fireworks, float parade and water curtain, swimming lessons at Monte Rio Beach and the Variety Show!!– There is a lot going on in Monte Rio this month.
Come join the festivities on July 5th at Monte Rio Beach as we celebrate Independence Day Monte Rio style beginning with the Big Rocky Games for children from 12-4 followed by a float parade at dusk. See the famous Monte Rio water curtain which shows images of the American Flag projected off the bridge and then get ready to view an amazing fireworks show - the best on the river - bar none.
This year’s National Anthem will be performed by Dan Fein and Becky Fein with DJ Damien Olsen once again in charge of the music program. 5th District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins will be a guest judge for the float parade. There will be food vendors and lots of fun for everyone.
Be sure to stop by the Chamber of Commerce’s merchandise booth to pick up a tank top, t-shirt or hoody. All sales help keep this free community event going. This is the 19th year the Chamber has co-sponsored the Fireworks Event. Be sure to join us next year when we celebrate our 20th anniversary!
The fun continues on Saturday with the Monte Rio Fire Station’s BBQ from 12-5pm. Show your support for our local firefighters who dedicate themselves to keeping our communities safe each and every day.
Swimming & water safety classes are scheduled to begin at Monte Rio Beach on July 15 and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 26. There are 4 classes each day for children ages 5-13.
The cost is a nominal $10 per session. Brought to you by the YMCA and co-sponsored by Friends of Monte Rio and MRRPD this is a great opportunity to introduce children to basic water safety skills. More information at fomr.org and monterio.org.
The biggest show of the year, the 108th Monte Rio Variety Show will take place at the Monte Rio Amphitheater on Thursday July 25.
The amphitheater is an amazing venue in the heart of Monte Rio where you will be able to enjoy top notch entertainment while being surrounded by majestic towering redwoods. There really is no experience quite like this.
Bring your own chairs and a jacket or blankets as the evening turns quite chilly once the sun goes down. This year the show is introducing 2 new items available for purchase - Chocolate barks made using E. Guittard’s chocolate and Stumptown Brewery Ale.
The first one is CANDIED BACON BEER BRITTLE and the second one is BAXMAN BARK. Both of these are sure to be huge hit. All proceeds from the show go to support local charities. More information at monterioshow.org or monterio.org. Advance tickets available at brownpapertickets.com, the Russian River Chamber of Commerce office in Guerneville or by emailing tickets@monterioshow.
I have been disheartened in the last few weeks to see the amount of trash and appliances of various types that have been put out on the streets of my neighborhood and other neighborhoods as well. It seems like a refrigerator or dishwasher or unwanted cabinets or just plain junk appears almost daily along our streets. Sometimes these items are advertised as “free” however this does not mean you are off the hook for disposing of these yourself if they are not picked up in a timely manner. The county sponsored free debris pick up program has ended. Let’s all help keep our neighborhoods clutter free.
I was not able to attend last month’s North Coast Regional Board Workshop regarding new septic regulations for the lower Russian River but I found a summary of the meeting on the Russian River Watershed Protection Committee website rrwpc.org. If you live within 600 feet from the center of the river you will be receiving a questionnaire sometime in the summer of 2020. The TMDL ( Total Maximum Daily Load ) action plan will require inspections and reports to be submitted to the Regional Board about individual OWTS ( Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems ) within 5 years and corrective action will be required within 15 years. rrwpc.org is a very good site for up to date information regarding the lower Russian River Watershed.
And finally – Happy Birthday to my mother who was born on July 3. Wish you were still here!
