Pottery by Picasso at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts

Works from the homes of local private collectors
accompanied by poems

Oct 30, 2018

The excitement and interest was palpable at the Sebastopol Center of the Arts opening night of Thursday evening, Oct 25, I attended the opening of an amazing show at the Sebastopol Center of the Arts, called “Reverberations: A Visual Conversation”. The excitement and interest were palpable as I walked into the already very crowded, spacious and uplifting gallery space, half hour into the show. As in all openings I had to make my way through conversations and viewers to see the pieces. I was thrilled to get to see pieces by renown artists such as Juan Gris, Miro, Käthe Kollwitz, Yugi Hiratsuka, Francis Bacon, Nathan Oliviera and two pottery pieces by Picasso, to name just a few. A personally beloved local maestro Maury Lapp was also included, one of whose small drawings I actually own myself, having bought it at an Art Trails open studio while he was still with us. This was also a great opportunity for local artists to meet collectors.

Piece by the Late Local Master Maurey Lapp.I often go back to view the artwork in a quieter, contemplative mood during a daytime slot taking in the art more fully, uninterrupted by conversation and greetings, which I did on Saturday. I highly recommend you do too, this is a rare opportunity not to be missed. For me as an artist, it was not only inspirational but emotionally moving and very thought-provoking.

Each work is accompanied by a descriptive and inspirational poem written specifically as “homage to the emotional impact of the work”. The show runs through December 2Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5pm and have been extended on Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm.

Entrance to all exhibitions at Sebastopol Center for the Arts is FREE.

To the credit of the center we are also invited to attend free of charge other related events that will give you a better understanding of the literary contributions as well as the collector’s views on buying, owning and living with Art:

Anjana Utarid, Executive Director hails Catherine Devriese curator of the exhibit and our team members for the exceptional work they have done to bring this exhibition to the public. I urge you to read the introductory preface to the show and how it came about by Catherine Devriese, the Center’s Visual Arts Director here:

To give you a taste I’ll end with a quote from her inviting preface:

“This exhibition began with a simple idea: rarely seen work from the homes of private collectors would be shown in our gallery in an unprecedented offering to the community. That idea came to life in the recognition that a work of art, beginning in the artist’s impulse, generates energy and movement, like a gong sounding and resounding through the collector and into the experience of everyone who sees it. That to bring these artists together in a room is to create a visual conversation. And that we could open the conversation into language, into poetry. This was the genesis of "REVERBERATIONS: A VISUAL CONVERSATION.”
