As our community arrives at the 2-year anniversary of the 2017 North Bay Fires on October 8th, we are reminded about our vulnerabilities, our struggles to recover, and our continued need for resiliency. Fire and emergency services have been elevated issues over the past two years. They deserve our attention, our respect, and our support. As fire departments countywide are grappling with how to best serve their communities, the local Fire Protection District Boards of Directors in Graton, Gold Ridge and Occidental have decided to take matters into their own hands by placing funding measures on the ballot for a special election this November 5th.

As many of you know or have come to notice, the Freestone store has been closed for some time now - since the owner passed away last year. Bill Cantrell had operated the store for about 20 years and suddenly died on March 8, 2018, resulting in its immediate closure.

Join the Bodega Volunteer Fire Department’s most delicious fundraiser of the year! Saturday, October 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. is the Polenta and Beef Stew Dinner. Local holiday fun on Saturday, October 26 starting at 8:30 p.m. At Dinucci’s in Valley Ford, join your neighbors for the Annual Halloween Costume Party. Also at Dinucci’s they are currently taking Thanksgiving reservations. The Sebastopol Area Senior Center will transform into a Creepy Carnival Extravaganza! Expect wild decorations in every room of this dance party.

Salli “Raz” (Harrison) Rasberry was a beloved West County community member, cherished and known by many as the Original Hippie of Sonoma County. She died peacefully in her Freestone home surrounded by family at the age of 78, after a heartfelt, successful and fulfilling life. The newest novel by Eldonna Edwards is Clover Blue, which is about a boy searching for identity in rural Freestone, Sonoma County, within a commune of the 1970s.

The Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery now has its very own store front! The Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery now has its very own store front! Doors opened on May 2nd, although the shop was purchased in early 2016. Karen Bianchi runs the distribution out of their new location along with the front of house. She is excited because it’s “good to build relationships with the consumer.”
The Sonoma-Marin Dairy Belt has undoubtedly transformed due to increased costs and consolidation of the market. The business is not what it used to be. Fourth generation farmers like Karen have to think outside the milk box to survive and continue their family legacy.
